Banyuwangi is accelerating rapidly in order to improve its tourism industry. In the last decade or so, Banyuwangi has done a lot to sell their wonderful destinations to the world. One of the most remarkable spots is Plengkung Beach, also known as G-Land.

The beach is, In Indonesian standard, is nothing remarkable in term of beauty. However, the main selling point of this beach is not its panorama, but its waves, swells, and breaks. Plengkung Beach is one of the best surfing spots in the world.
Location
The beach is located in Alas Purwo National Park, literally the southeast corner of Java Island. It is sitting on the eastern side of the Bay of Grajagan. Since it is a part of a national park forest, the access is a bit hard. The beach is also rather secluded, perfect for a getaway destination. Even though you can get to this beach overland, most people just come to the beach by boat from Bali. Almost all of them are surfers.
History
Plengkung Beach was discovered in 1972 when a group of American surfers sends an expedition there. Soon after the discovery, the first surf camp was set at G-land, a concept that would spread to the whole world. The surf camp still in operation until today. Since the discovery, G-Land doesn’t change much. It’s still a great place for surfers to be and the atmosphere in the surf camp is as jolly as ever.
The Surf Breaks
The east side of Grajagan Bay is the home of a very long barreling left-hand breaks. The breaks here are world-class, generally considered as one of the best left-hand waves in the world. During in-season, the breaks here is the most consistently ridable waves in the world. The surf break here is divided into several sections: Kongs, Moneytrees, SPeedies, and Launching Pads.
Accommodation and Transportation
If you go to the beach overland, you will need to rent or charter a car because you will need to go for about 75 kilometers. Some parts of them are not covered by public transport. If you go by boat from Bali or Banyuwangi, the route is a bit more direct and smoother. Furthermore, there are some simple cottages and camps on the beach.
Even though Bali and its southern beaches also accommodate surfing activities, most serious surfers tend to go to G-Land for a world-class break. This Plengkung Beach is where you can enjoy the waves to the max. Next
